Along with all the buzz about microcurrent comes all the claims about what it can do. Can it really clean up your lymphatic system, improve the appearance of your scars and end your pain? Well, yes and no.
Just as the word “vitamins” covers a broad spectrum of individual specimens that each have different effects on your body, “microcurrent” covers a broad spectrum of frequencies that also each have different effects on your body. Microcurrent alone has been demonstrated to increase energy production in cells but it's the frequencies (hz delivered via the microcurrent) that do specific things to specific tissues. Using the right hertz for your specific problem is much like using the right vitamin for your specific needs.
For a better understanding about how frequencies work, let's start with how cells work. Picture your cells as little factories that do different jobs in your body. Liver cells get rid of toxins, muscle cells keep you moving, etc. Just like you, your cells have both rest and production modes. Sometimes they have work to do and sometimes they don’t.
So how do cells know when to go to work? Inside each cell is a manager with set of instructions for what to do in “production” mode (a simplified explanation of DNA’s job). On the outside of each cell are receptors that wait around for the work orders to come in. When the work order comes in, the receptor lets the manager know and the manager makes things happen.
Applying this concept, let’s use the example of inflammation: Infections or injuries activate the immune response and change cell signaling when the fragments of the bacteria, virus or damaged cell debris land on the receptors of immune system cells. This causes the cells to produce cytokines and inflammatory peptides (LOX and COX). As the injury or infection heals, the signals change, the immune system normalizes and production of the inflammatory peptides is turned off. But sometimes, the immune system doesn’t turn off and people become chronically ill or have non-resolving inflammation. The genetic expression fails to return to normal.
The job of anti-inflammatory drugs is to land on the receptors and instruct the genes to turn off LOX and COX. Specific frequencies delivered via microcurrent can work in much the same way but even faster and without side effects. In a blind study, mice were used to test specific frequencies for inflammation. Compared to plain microcurrent (no frequency) which produced no results, the specific frequencies for inflammation and immune system produced results equivalent to prescription drugs. In repeat exposure two weeks later, mice who had received the specific frequencies right after initial exposure demonstrated that the immune response had been altered. This research suggests that specific frequencies may even help normalize the function of the immune system permanently.
How do we know specific frequencies really do specific things? Objective tests like the one described above revealing chemical changes in the blood have demonstrated the changes before and after microcurrent treatments. but perhaps the most compelling evidence has been the numerous case studies which demonstrate reproducible results. Practitioners, including ones who practice at major hospitals like Cleveland Clinic have been sharing the results in medical journals. With the evidence mounting, surely microcurrent is the “wave” of the future (pun intended).
